Surprise! Ricky Gervais Knows You Hated His Trans Jokes But He Doesn’t Particularly Care

Ricky Gervais hosted the Golden Globes Sunday night and in his opening monologue, said a lot of things that offended a lot of people. Are you surprised? Don’t be, it’s Ricky Gervais. What’d you expect?

During his show opener, Gervais took a lot of cheap and transphobic digs at Caitlyn Jenner, opening with this classic: “I’ve changed, not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously.” He followed that gem up with a lame joke about women drivers, which is as lazy a joke as you can get, even if you strip away the transphobic nonsense and look at it for what it is.

“What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t do everything.”

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Gervais came to his own defense.

Nice. The defense, from what I can tell, is that he’s Ricky Gervais. What else you got, son?

Ah, yes. Of course. Nothing like citing your own churlish character as your only defense.
