The White House Has Responded To the Change.Org Petition To Pardon Steven Avery
The White House has responded to a petition asking President Obama to pardon Steven Avery and his nephew, Brendan Dassey, both the subjects of Making A Murderer and currently sitting in jail for a murder that lots and lots of people think they didn’t commit.
Sadly, if you’re a fan(?) of Avery and Dassey and adamantly against the miscarriage of justice, pack up your bags, put away your e-signatures and retreat. President Obama can’t do anything about this. From the official response:
Since Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey are both state prisoners, the President cannot pardon them. a pardon in this case would need to be issued at the state level by the appropriate authorities.
If you are someone with a brief, rudimentary understanding of the law, this would’ve already been clear to you, just saying. The WhiteHouse.gov petition reached 129,901 signatures, which is over the 100.00 required to actually get a response from the White House. It reads:
Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey should be given a full pardon by President Obama for their wrongful conviction in the connection to the murder of Teresa Halbach.
Based on the evidence in the Netflix documentary series “Making a Murderer”, the justice system embarrassingly failed both men, completely ruining their entire lives.
Fair point, America. But, a documentary series isn’t a court of law, sorry!!
