Evangelist Franklin Graham Quits GOP Because They Failed To Defund Planned Parenthood

Evangelist Franklin Graham is taking his toys and leaving the Republican Party, after they failed to defund Planned Parenthood, and Congress passed a bill leaving its funding intact. He explained this reasoning in a Facebook post on Monday.

Shame on the Republicans and the Democrats for passing such a wasteful spending bill last week. And to top it off,…

Contrary to what Graham said in his post, the United States does not provide federal funding for abortion, due to the grotesque Hyde Amendment, which prevents this. Also–not that I feel like defending the GOP, but they did actually vote to defund Planned Parenthood–that vote was just vetoed by President Obama.

He ended his rant with a call to “godly men and women” to run for positions as “mayors, country commissioners, city council members, school board members”–which was a particularly successful strategy in the early days of the Christian Right. Frankly, I think we need to start doing more of this ourselves rather than placing all hope for change into whomever will be the next President.

Despite taking his leave of the GOP, Graham says he is a supporter of Donald Trump.

Graham’s father, the evangelist Billy Graham, was notable for his association with the Republican Party and several presidents, specifically with President Nixon–which later led to a scandal after Graham was caught on the Watergate tapes saying that “the Jews” had a “stranglehold” on the American media. He later apologized for his statements and continued on advising several Presidents after Nixon.
