Steve Harvey Messes Up, Accidentally Crowns The Wrong Miss Universe
Last night while you were watching the season finale of Homeland, Steve Harvey, host of this year’s Miss Universe pageant made what was one of the biggest mistakes I’ve seen on live television and mistakenly crowned Miss Colombia as the winner.
Harvey initially announces Miss Colombia, Adriana Gutierrez, as the winner. The crown goes on her head, she hugged and kissed Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, and then stood at the foot of the stage, waving her country’s flag, crying, while the Miss Universe theme song plays on for what felt like a little too long. Then, Harvey came back. “I have to apologize,” he said. “The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!”
Here’s what Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach’s face looked like in the ensuing confusion.
While Wurtzbach made her way to the front of the stage to accept the award she thought she had just lost, Harvey does his best to apologize. “Listen folks, let me take control of this,” he says. “This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. The first runner-up is Colombia. Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies.”
To be quite fair, this is what the card looked like that had the winners’ names.
Harvey then has to de-crown Miss Colombia and crown Miss Philippines and the whole thing is just REALLY AWFUL TO WATCH. Harvey also apologized on Twitter, in a tweet that has since been deleted.
