Schools Shut Down In Bible Belt Due To Lesson On Isam

A simple high school lesson at Riverheads High School in Augusta County, Virginia became the source of shrieking uproar for all of the schools in its district. Angry parents sending calls and emails including some threats, caused security in all Augusta County schools to shutter its doors for the safety of its students.

This is the lesson in question that turned evangelical Christians into raving lunatics:

Yes, that’s right. It’s about calligraphy in Islam. :-|

This is a real, tangible example of Islamophobia, Xenophobia and Anti-intellectualism at play. To be so collectively fearful of an educational lesson that you trigger effects so far and wide? It should be illegal, quite frankly.

Parents attacked the teacher who assigned the lesson, Cheryl LaPorte. LaPorte even claims that she had not designed the assignment herself, but took it from a standard workbook on world religions in order to get her students through “Standards of Learning Tests.” IT’S ON THE FUCKING CURRICULUM, PARENTS!!!

There are still continued calls, emails an Facebook posts attempting to get this teacher fired over a completely innocuous and unbiased lesson. What I want to know is, what about any students who happen to be Muslim, what do you do then? How do you tell these kids that their religion and culture and history is so hated that schools have to be shut down?

Is this the Trump effect at play? What are your thoughts?

I weep for the children of today.
