Serial Just Dropped Season Two – Happy Holidays, Podcast Devotees!

Oh, hi, the most popular and controversial podcast in recent memory has dropped its second season this morning, taking all of us completely by surprise! Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah!

Yep, Serial is back, and true to early rumors, the second season addresses the mystery of Bowe Bergdahl, the Army sergeant who disappeared from his base in Afghanistan, spent five years in Taliban custody, and was traded back to the U.S. in May 2014, in exchange for five Taliban soldiers who had been held in Guantanamo Bay. The question at the time (if you weren’t paying attention) was: Was this guy worth five prisoners? Bergdahl’s release cast doubt on the U.S.’s dedication to its policy not to negotiate with terrorists, and when rumors started circulating that Bergdahl had maybe defected to the Taliban during his captivity it became a particularly sensational news story (this was found to be untrue).

Now, Sarah Koenig & Co. are giving Bergdahl a chance to tell his side of the story. In the first episode, “DUSTWUN” (code for “duty status – whereabouts unknown”), he explains how and why he left his base. The response to the podcast’s surprise drop has been predictably massive, so godspeed trying to download it – and we’ll see if this season has the kind of cult response the story of Adnan Syed incited.
