Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminists Will Be Given To Every 16-Year Old In Sweden

This world is often a barge of garbage floating in a sea of poo, but sometimes something nice and pleasant breaks through the mire and proves to us all that maybe there’s a tiny sliver of hope. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s We Should All Be Feminists was recently translated into Swedish, and at the book launch it was announced that a copy of the text would be distributed to every 16 -year-old in Sweden.

The translation is published in part by the Swedish Woman’s Lobby and is important enough to be deemed essential reading by a whole mess of organizations. Swedish Woman’s Lobby Chair Clara Berglund said:

“This is the book I would have wanted to get for all the guys in my class when I was 16 years old. That is why it is so important that we contribute to this project. It is a gift to all students in grades two, but also a gift to ourselves and to future generations.”

Imagine if every 16-year old student in this country got a copy of a radical and intersectional feminist text written by a woman of color. Imagine if we lived in a country where that would be supported by the government and basic tenets of general equality were taught in schools. Imagine! Imagine. Close your eyes really tight and imagine. Is it working? Do you see it, yet?

I hear Stockholm is lovely this time of year. Catch ya on the flip side.
