Today’s Google Doodle Celebrates Everyone’s Favorite Redhead, Anne Of Green Gables
Today would have been L.M Montgomery’s 141st birthday, so Google decided to pay tribute via these adorable Google Doodles depicting the foibles of Anne-with-an-E Shirley and her best friend, Diana.
Anne and Diana were the Ur-Lila and Lena of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels, I’m sure of it. Their friendship was one of the most beloved examples of female friendships for a generations of women — the original kindred spirits, bound together by that fierce love you have for your first real, true best friend.
The Google Doodle is a nice tribute to a series of books that entranced me and many other women as a young child, though it is terrible that Anne married Gilbert and had one bajillion babies instead of running off to Toronto or something and fulfilling her dreams of being a best-selling writer. The books sort of fell off once Anne and Gilbz got together, but don’t sleep on Rilla of Ingleside. That book has some of the best and most thrilling descriptions of clothing to date, and it’s well worth every minute of your time.
