This Year’s Pirelli Calendar Will Recognize Women For Their Brains, Not Their Bods

The Pirelli calendar is a yearly tradition in which an Italian tire manufacturer spends an awful lot of money rounding up pretty women, poses them in highly stylized and fantastic scenarios without their clothes on, and then sends out said calendar to an exclusive group of consumers, mostly of the male and wealthy variety.

Last year’s Pirelli calendar featured mostly-naked women in PVC corsets and stilettos. This year, Pirelli decided to try something new, featuring women known for their accomplishments and their brains. Shot by Annie Leibowitz in tasteful black and white, most of the participants are — shocker! — fully clothed, save for Serena Williams, Amy Schumer and Natalie Vodianova.

Here’s Amy Schumer, looking like a normal person — because she is — sitting in her underpants and some good shoes, drinking a latte because she’s probably just getting dressed for work, like the rest of us do every damn day.

Here’s Serena Williams, nude but for a pair of underwear, showing the camera the awesome nature of her physique, an image intended to command respect more than anything else.

The calendar will also feature Ava DuVernay, Yoko Ono, Dreamworks chair Melody Hobson, Fran Leibowitz, Shirin Neshat, Patti Smith, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Tavi Gevinson and arts advocate Agnes Gund, posing with her granddaughter Sadie Rain Hope-Gund.

It feels ridiculous to acknowledge that it’s refreshing to see women being recognized for their achievements and not their bodies, but alas, these are the times we live in. In a cruel twist, the Pirelli calendar is only available to whoever Pirelli choses to send it to, so if you’re not a high-net worth old man eating filet mignon while drinking 100-year old Scotch, find the rest of the images right here.
