Listen To Carly Rae Jepsen Improve Upon That Old Chestnut, “Last Christmas”
Christmas songs, save Mariah’s inimitable holiday classic, are generally trash. [I strongly disagree, for the record. — Amelia] Schmaltzy and overwrought and played to death from Black Friday through the New Year, they’re the worst part about a season full of things that are actually nice, like presents, joy and Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. But Wham!’s “Last Christmas” is a banger. It makes little to no sense — there’s a lover, they broke up, now he wants to get back together? — but it’s catchy and goes well with a few too many drinks and the snack table at the holiday party you’re at against your will.
Here’s Carly Rae Jepsen’s version of the classic, which is poppy, breathy and a good time all around. Give it a few listens now and enjoy the newness of it all, because you’ll be hearing this at least three times a day through the New Year.
