1,500 Mormons Resign From Church To Protest New Same-Sex Policies

Roughly 1,500 Mormons are resigning from the Mormon Church of Latter-day Saints to protest a new policy that labels same-sex couples “apostate” as well as banning children of same-sex relationships from being baptized in the church.

The guidebook of these new policies called “Handbook 1,” were handed out to church leaders at the beginning of November.

Lawyer Mark Naugle will be handing all of the 1,500 resignation letters to the LDS headquarters in Salt Lake City personally as a symbolic act of protest.

LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement regarding these same-sex policies:

“While it respects the law of the land, and acknowledges the right of others to think and act differently, it does not perform or accept same-sex marriage within its membership.”
