UPDATE (6:28 p.m. EST): The fourth shooting at the Les Halles shopping center has been confirmed, though it’s unknown if there have been any additional fatalities or injuries in this incident.
An escaped hostage from the Bataclan concert hall told CNN that multiple terrorists, not wearing masks, stormed the theater and fired into the crowd at random executing hostages.
UPDATE (6:15 p.m. EST): According to CNN, one of the reasons why there might not be much information about the hostage situation at the Bataclan is that police in France encourage the media not to do blow-by-blow reports during crises like these, when the situation is still ongoing. The Bataclan has a capacity of 1,500, and the Eagles of Death Metal show was sold out. You can now watch the France 46 livestream above.
UPDATE (6:00 p.m. EST): France’s President François Hollande has closed the country’s borders and declared a state of emergency. Authorities are now calling the situation a series of at least six coordinated attacks. The hostage situation at the Bataclan concert hall is ongoing, with CNN reporting that the screams and gunshots could be heard, indicating that those inside were being shot.
UPDATE (5:50 p.m. EST): President Obama addressed the nation in press conference, saying, “We stand prepared and ready to provide whatever assistance the people of France need.”
UPDATE (5:45 p.m. EST): There’s reportedly been a third shooting at the Les Halles shopping center according to France 24. The death toll has reached at least 46, according to USA Today.
According to the Associated Press, at least 30 people are dead and more than 60 people (the AP is now reporting 100) have been taken hostage in at least four incidents of violence in Paris, France this evening. The fatalities are reportedly the result of shootings at a bar and a restaurant in the 10th arrondissement, as well as along Rue de la Fontaine au roi, Rue de Charonne and Rue Bataclan, according to Le Figaro.
There were also reportedly two suicide bombers outside the Paris stadium where a soccer match was being held. In the Vine below, you can hear how loud the explosion was:
Hostages have also been taken at the Bataclan concert hall where the American band Eagles of Death Metal had been performing. It’s unclear if these incidents are related and who is responsible. This is an ongoing situation and we’ll be updating this post as more information becomes available. You can watch the France 24 news livestream here.
