Shonda Rhimes Shares The Decision That Changed Her Life

“Saying yes for an entire year turned out to be one of the most amazing decisions I have ever made. It was also a little insane, a lot terrifying and sometimes wildly embarrassing.”

Shonda Rhimes always seemed to me like the kind of woman-about-town who never stops grabbing life by the lapels, but apparently, she wasn’t always that way. Even as “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” were taking off, she fell into a habit of turning down opportunities and invitations in favor of a safe routine, and found herself stuck in a rut. In a recent interview, Rhimes told People that a rude awakening came over Thanksgiving 2013, when her older sister opened Rhimes’ eyes to the fact that she never said “yes” to anything. As anyone who thinks in storytelling format for a living might have done, she decided she simply had to try spending a whole year saying yes to all the opportunities she normally would say no to and see where it led. In 2014, her “year of yes,” she found greater professional and personal success than she ever dreamed possible.

She wrote a whole book about the experience, which comes out on November 1o, but just this advice alone — to say yes to everything that comes your way — is pretty impactful all on its own. I’ve definitely found it to be true whenever I apply it to my own life (except when I say yes to too much and overschedule myself, which also totally happens, but that’s neither here nor there). As she told People, “doing something you’re afraid of makes it stop being something you’re afraid of.” Sounds pretty solid to me! [People]
