What?! A New “Star Trek” TV Series Is Reportedly In Development?!

September 2016 will mark the 50th anniversary of Gene Roddenberry’s “Star Trek” franchise making its debut on television – and according to The Hollywood ReporterCBS is developing a new “Star Trek” series to premiere that same month. “Star Trek” film producer Alex Kurtzman is involved in the project, which will be the first new Trek series on TV since the cancellation of the utterly meh “Enterprise” in 2005.

As a diehard “Star Trek” fan — I prefer not to call myself a Trekkie for reasons – I am both excited and concerned about this news. There are few things I love with more childlike enthusiasm than “Star Trek,” however, these TV spin-offs are consistently hit or miss. “The Next Generation” and “Deep Space Nine”? GENIUS. “Enterprise” and “Voyager”? Sorry, not so much. Roddenberry has been dead for nearly 25 years, and I can’t help but worry about the hatchet job that might have been done to his overall vision as it’s been handed down over the years. “Star Trek” is sci-fi meets action-adventure entertainment, sure, but it’s also so much more. It’s philosophical, really, which means it’s easy for a bunch of hacks scrambling for ratings to fuck up.
