Uh, Anonymous? Pretty Sure This Mayor Is Not A KKK Member
Earlier today, Anonymous released the names of several mayors and Senators they claim are secret KKK members.
Upon first glance, it seemed like it could be legit, mostly because the only person on there I was thoroughly familiar with is Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX). I would buy John Cornyn being in the KKK before probably anyone else in the Senate. I mean, he once compared gay marriage to a human marrying a box turtle, and ran this as a campaign ad.
So, you know, not exactly a huge stretch! If you were making a list like this and wanted it to be believable, obviously this is the guy you’d pick.
However, a closer look into the list reveals that not all is right. One of the people named on the list is Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogela, pictured above with her family. I’m gonna say that unless she is in doing some kind of seriously deep, deep, deep undercover work, is almost definitely not a member of the KKK.
You see, not only did Rogela get her start in politics organizing with Cesar Chavez — not really an activity KKK members are oft drawn to given their historical opposition to unions and contentious relationship with Chavez himself — but she is also a member of an interracial family, and supports gun control.
If you go to what appears to be the Geocities Webpage of the Ku Klos Klan of Tennessee, the “Klavern” she is supposedly affiliated with, you will see that two of their very top issues are opposing both interracial marriages and gun control. If they were going to recruit a public official to join their ranks, Mayor Rogero is likely the last person on earth they would choose.
Mayor Rogero responded to the accusation on her Facebook page:
One of the other people accused in the hack was Lexington, KY Mayor Jim Gray, an openly gay man. As I am quite sure that the KKK does not have an LGBT wing, I’m gonna call bullshit on this as well.
Clearly, something is up with this “hack,” and it’s probably best not to take it as the god’s honest truth. I’m not about to accuse anyone (even John Cornyn, whom I loathe) of being in the KKK when there is too much that just does not look right here.
