Meet The Witches Of Instagram

You probably didn’t realize it, but according to astrologists, back in 2012, the Earth and its inhabitants began a powerful period of spiritual awakening, prophesied by the Mayans as a shift in our collective consciousness. According to one astrology website I found, “the essence is we are shifting from our current limited state, to a higher vibration and level of consciousness – a more spiritually evolved state, free from many of the individual and collective problems of our present existence.” Perhaps you’ve felt this shift in your own life as a gentle but noticeable yearning to connect with a power greater than your physical self, be it through organized religion, learning about your ancestors, practices like yoga and meditation, a sudden interest in death via the occult, or the traditions of nature-worshipping, goddess-centric religions like Paganism.

One place where this 2012 shift was apparent was on Instagram, where, amidst the selfies, latte foam art, and foodie pics, a new, decidedly gloomier, but still magical “trend” emerged — WITCHES. Modern day witches have adopted Instagram as their social network of choice, posting photos of crystals, spells, altars, tarot decks, graveyards and various oddities alongside musings on energy healing, goddess worship, communing with nature, and prioritizing art and spiritual abundance over money and traditional ideas of success.
