Small Victory: Two Retailers Remove Transphobic Caitlyn Jenner Costume

Back in August, because August is when Halloween starts, a few costume companies started advertising a Caitlyn Jenner costume featuring a cis male, masculine-presenting model dressed up as Caitlyn Jenner from her Vanity Fair cover:

transphobic caitlyn costume

The trans community and our allies were rightfully angry about this. Trans identities have, for a long time, been dismissed as “men dressing up as women” or vice-versa. The fact that these retailers chose to use an image of a model who was clearly meant to look like a man stuffing himself into women’s clothes felt like a shot at Caitlyn Jenner and her identity as a woman, and, in turn, a shot at trans identities, period.

But! Good news! DoSomething.org started a campaign to get these images removed. They encouraged the public to leave one-star reviews for the costume on Wholesale Halloween Costumes and Anytime Costumes, with a comment explaining why the image is transphobic. Those retailers have removed the costume from their web sites, although they could have just taken the tack that Spirit, the company that manufactures the costume did, and use a model who presents feminine, as seen in the header image.

Either way, it’s a small victory for the trans community – because trans identities aren’t a joke.
