Pharma-Bro Martin Shkreli Tries To Donate To Bernie Sanders, Gets Denied

Remember Martin Shkreli, the douchebag who bought the patent for Daraprim — a life-saving drug often given to AIDS and cancer patients — and raised the price from $13.70 to $750? Of course you do! He was terrible!

Anyway, Martin had a bit of a sad about the fact that Bernie was out there on the campaign trail bashing him and his fellow pharma-bros — and he was hoping he could get a meeting with him to explain his side of the story. So, he donated the maximum amount of $2,700 in hopes of being able to do so. Sort of like a creepy dude at a bar who buys you a drink after you tell him to go away and is then like “NOW YOU HAVE TO TALK TO ME.”

After donating, Martin went and started telling god and everyone about how he totally donated to Bernie’s campaign. In an interview with the Boston Globe, he said “I think it’s cheap to use one person’s action as a platform without kind of talking to that person. He’ll take my money, but he won’t engage with me for five minutes to understand this issue better.”

Think he might be overestimating himself a little here? I would say so. It’s more than a little condescending to suggest that “engaging” with him is going to help anyone, particularly Bernie Sanders, understand this issue better.

Alas, when Sen. Sanders found out about his donation, he metaphorically poured that drink right over Shkreli’s head by taking that money and donating it instead to the Whitman-Walker health clinic in Washington. Campaign spokesperson Michael Briggs categorically stated, “We are not keeping the money from this poster boy for drug company greed.”
