Erykah Badu’s Cover Of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” Is The Best Thing You’ll Hear All Day

As if I couldn’t love Drake’s “Hotline Bling” more, the divine, incomparable Erykah Badu has posted her spin on the track to Soundcloud and it is EVERYTHING. It’s jazzy and funky and sexy, as is everything Badu touches, not to mention a little funny too — midway through the track she offers up this silly little breakdown:

“You’ve reached the Erykah Badu hotline. If you’re calling for Erykah, press one. If you’re calling to wish her a happy birthday, Kwanzaa, MLK, Black History Month, Juneteenth or Hannukah, press two. If you’re calling ’cause you just saw her on BET, MTV or any other social media outlets, and you’re checking to make sure you’re still in good standing, press three. If you’re calling to beg for some shit in general, press 4. If you’re calling to beg for the shit but this is that pre-call before the actual begging, press 5. If you’ve already made the pre-call and this is the actual call to beg, press 6….”

The choice in cover may seem kind of random at first, until you realize that it was cowritten by Seven Benjamin, Erykah’s son with André 3000 of OutKast. This is also probably the point at which you press pause in order to run into the bathroom to look for grey hairs, because WTF, Erykah and Andre’s son is already at the age where he can co-write songs with Drake? How old am I?

Anyway, this cover is so perfect that I’ve listened to it on repeat all morning, with no plans of stopping. Erykah Badu should cover everything ever, not to mention record more of her own music ASAP NOW PLEASE OMG. [Pitchfork]
