Amy Schumer Got A $8 Million Dollar Book Deal Because She Held Out For What She’s Worth
If you’re a famous female comedian, part of the Faustian arrangement you make when you accept the mantle of fame is that you will write a book. Amy Poehler’s written a book. So has Tina Fey. Mindy Kaling wrote two books. Lena Dunham’s pooped out one and will probably poop out another. Judy Greer has written a book, and Chelsea Handler has written a few. Now, Amy Schumer will write one, with the help of The New Yorker’s Patricia Marx –and she’s doing it for a shitload of money because she knows her own worth and held out for the best possible offer.
The New York Times reports that Schumer had inked a $1 million dollar deal with Harper Collins way back in 2013 — pre Trainwreck, pre “Inside Amy Schumer” — and she pecked away at a couple of essays, before setting them aside, canceling the contract and returning the advance in order to work on her actual career. Now, after a “frenzied” bidding war, Gallery Books has added her to their roster for a cool $8 million, with a publishing date set for sometime in late 2016.
Like everything in life, there’s a lesson here, but this one is clear and strong and true: know your worth. Understand your value. Don’t be afraid to take charge of whatever the fuck it is you want to do, and understand that whatever they’re offering you, you’re probably worth more than that. Follow Amy’s lead. It will be worth your time.
