Senate Democrats Prepared To Filibuster Through Planned Parenthood Defunding

The congressional funding bill that would keep the government from shutting down after Wednesday is heading to the Senate today, but with complications, of course. As it exists now, the resolution strips Planned Parenthood of federal funding. Senate Democrats are prepared to filibuster through the vote to prevent its passage in its current form, and the White House has released a statement specifying that President Obama would veto the resolution anyway, stating that:

“The Administration urges the Congress to pass full-year appropriations legislation for FY 2016 that excludes ideological provisions that are intended to advance a narrow political agenda, reverses sequestration for defense and non-defense priorities, and makes critical investments needed to support national security and sustain economic growth.”

Many Republicans, however, are less interested in using this resolution to defund Planned Parenthood at any cost than you might imagine – even Mitch McConnell has said that if it comes to it, he’d rather pass a short-term budget resolution without any provisions regarding Planned Parenthood than have the government shut down.

TIME, meanwhile, is featuring an interview with the man behind the entire Planned Parenthood crisis. David Daleidan, a 26-year-old anti-abortion activist, planned an undercover investigation of Planned Parenthood’s fetal tissue donations that took years to complete, and founded the Center for Medical Progress to release those highly-edited and totally fallacious videos in order to claim that Planned Parenthood is illegally selling fetal tissue from the abortions they provide. This claim has been widely debunked –Planned Parenthood is only compensated for the cost of transporting the tissue samples to the research centers who receive the donations, which is completely legal.

Daleidan says he was nervous about the timing of the videos’ release – just as presidential campaigns were heating up – because he thought the videos would get lost in the political ether. Not so, of course; despite their complete and utter inaccuracy, the CMP’s videos are the entire reason this funding bill has taken its shape, and the entire reason the government could shut down next week.
