Serena Williams Is Out At The U.S. Open Following Huge Upset By Roberta Vinci

Serena Williams is currently the number one ranked tennis player in the world. She was just beat, in a brutal and very close game, by Roberta Vinci, a woman who is currently ranked at 43rd. This is a tremendous upset! Like, huge. Unprecedented, almost.

Williams made it to the semi-finals after eking by her sister, Venus, in a grueling quarterfinal match on Tuesday. In Friday afternoon’s game, Williams beat Vinci 6-2 in the first round, but the scrappy lil’ Vinci came back and won the second, 4-6. By the third set, Williams seem tired and frustrated, while Vinci had seemingly found her stride. She beat Williams in the third round, ending Serena’s dreams of a calendar Grand Slam, and advancing to the finals.

Serena’s maybe-boyfriend Drake was in the crowd, covering his swole and looking aggrieved, as one does. Maybe it was his fault? Or maybe Vinci is just a good tennis player who saw her chance and took it. Either way, congratulations to her, and our deepest condolences to Serena.
