Michael Stipe Responds To Trump & Other Candidates’ Use Of REM’s Music: “Go Fuck Yourselves”
“Go fuck yourselves, the lot of you—you sad, attention grabbing, power hungry little men. Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign.”
Michael Stipe initially took to, where else, Twitter late yesterday, to respond to reports that Donald Trump and Ted Cruz had used R.E.M.’s famous song, “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” at a Tea Party Rally. The band then posted an official statement on Facebook:
While we do not authorize or condone the use of our music at this political event, and do ask that these candidates cease and desist from doing so, let us remember that there are things of greater importance at stake here. The media and the American voter should focus on the bigger picture, and not allow grandstanding politicians to distract us from the pressing issues of the day and of the current Presidential campaign.
It absolutely kills me when politicians, in particular Conservative dingbats like Trump and Cruz, use songs by notoriously progressive musical artists without permission to further their agenda. And while I hardly expect the aforementioned power hungry little men to do any thoughtful analysis of lyrical content, this particular choice is extra, extra, extra facepalm-worthy. I sincerely doubt Cruz or Trump know who Lester Bangs is, let alone can recite all the lyrics and the latter should definitely be a requirement for anyone looking to use the song for their own wackadoo purposes.
