And Now For Some Very, Very Important Advice On How To Negotiate

Do you want to make more money at your job? Do you ever feel like you’re incapable of negotiating for literally anything, from another iced tea at a restaurant that’s about to close to a title change and some more vacation? Do you know, in your heart of hearts, that you deserve the things you want to ask for, but are paralyzed by the thought of actually walking into a room, closing the door and laying out what you want?

Do yourself a favor. Shut off whatever you’re listening to right now and tune your little ears to this week’s epsiode of Another Round, the podcast hosted by Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton over at Buzzfeed. Here it is, so you don’t have to snuffle around the internet looking for it.

They sat down with Stacy-Marie Ishmael, the woman behind the incredible Buzzfeed News app, to talk about the tricky work of negotiating for a raise when you’re a woman of color. The bit that resonated with me the most was about the importance of silence in negotiations which is best illustrated in that “30 Rock” clip. Think about the amount of times you’ve asked for something and filled the silence with babble, justifying why it is you deserve what you’re asking. That silence negates the power of what you just asked for. Don’t shoot yourself in the foot before you’ve even begun.

The entire section is absolutely required listening for anyone who’s ever been afraid of walking into a room and asking for what they want. And, if you’re in desperate need of something to listen to while you drive or commute or make dinner, this podcast is a must.
