PornHub Censors Ad After Cheesemakers Threaten Legal Action

In case you didn’t know, Pornhub is now offering a new premium version, which — for $9.99 a month — will allow users to access even more porn than is already offered for free on the internet. That is a lot of porn, I bet!

But an advertisement for the new service has ruffled some feathers in cheesemaking circles. Why? Because in said advertisement, a husband tells his wife that he would like to purchase some Parmigiano-Reggiano. The wife, impressed, asks, “When did you become such a foodie?” because she apparently hails from some strange land where Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese is super fancy and exotic, and the husband says that he wishes to purchase it because he has been told that it is the “Pornhub Premium” of cheeses.

Huh.

Anyway, the Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese Consortium was not happy about this commercial, as they do not want their product associated with anything so vulgar as PornHub.

Via The Guardian:

Lawyers for the association are investigating whether they have grounds to take legal action against Pornhub for supposedly tarnishing the name of their treasured cheese. In a statement released on Wednesday, the consortium branded the advert “not only distasteful and unacceptable, but offensive for our producers and their work”.

The video is “vulgarly aimed at making a profit from the exploitation of the fame gained by Parmigiano-Reggiano,” the statement said.

The dispute centres around the specific wording in the advert, said spokesman Igino Morini: “In the advert they’ve used the term Parmigiano-Reggiano, not the term parmesan which can be used generically in the US.”

Rather than risk a lawsuit, Pornhub has decided to simply censor the video, putting a black block over the cheese, and bleeping out the part where he says Parmigiano-Reggiano altogether. Given that the commercial was pretty confusing to begin with, I’d actually say it improves it a bit. Although it’s doubtful it will convince anyone to pay $9.99 a month for porn.
