To Read: Diverse German Art Porn Mag Pornceptual

I had the pleasure of finding the German mag Pornceptual in my Feedly this morning, via Metro. Thanks, Metro! Now I know there’s a porn magazine I’d actually want to read.

I have a long-standing bee in my bonnet about art porn, which is super-white, super-skinny, super-saccharine, and just plain boring, at least as far as sites like The Art Porn portray it. If you’re going to call something “art porn,” it seems like it should be more than soft-focus and softcore; it should be art, and it should be imaginative, empathetic, novel, unusual. And that’s what Pornceptual is trying to do: To present pornography that is art, and to answer the question, “Can art succeed where porn fails – to actually turn us on?”

Their vision statement is rad as fuck, and describes how they want to represent their audience’s sexuality instead of telling their audience how they ought to be sexual, the way mainstream porn does:

“We believe that pornography is not about self-identification, but rather about interaction. It does indeed affect how we perceive ourselves (as sexually active and gendered beings) and our self-representations, but those meanings are not individual identifications – they are codes shared by a culture. Instead of trying to instruct the viewer, we do exactly the opposite. We question the usual representations and invite our audience to be more participative and reflexive about pornography.”

The magazine started as an online gallery for erotic art, became an art collective, and has now published its first issue. It embraces models and artists who are diverse in terms of their sexual orientation, gender identity, race and ethnicity, and body types. They also host sex-positive events that look like pretty much the bossest parties ever.

Added to my to-do list: Purchasing this magazine and clearing some time out of my weekend. Obviously.
