Virginia College Demands Rape Victim Provide Entire Sexual History

Today in things that would only make any kind of sense if we all had somehow woken up in the year 1957 — Virginia Wesleyan College, currently being sued by a woman who was raped there in 2012 on her third day of college, is demanding that this victim provide them with her entire sexual history, including a list of all boyfriends and romantic interests.

The victim says she was given an alcoholic drink that was possibly drugged by a peer counselor employed by the school, and subsequently raped by another student. That student was subsequently expelled from school — although the school changed his record from “expelled” to “voluntarily withdrawn” in order to assist him with “seeking further studies” (and/or rape victims).

The victim is currently suing the school for $10 million for their hand in creating the environment in which she was raped, and the years of trauma she has suffered as a result.

The lawyer representing the school in this case is demanding the anonymous woman’s entire sexual history, including all boyfriends and romantic interests.

They say that this is to — I shit you not — “prove” that she was really a virgin when she was raped, as she claimed (as if it would matter if she wasn’t), and that she has appeared visibly traumatized to later romantic partners. They say that they need to speak to the person Jane Doe first had sex with following the rape, in order to ask him if she was, as she said, a virgin when she was raped — as if he would know better than her?

The school says that she has brought this inquiry on herself because she stated that she was traumatized from the rape and had little interest in sex and romantic relationships afterwards.

Via Huffington Post:

“As noted in the motion, Miss Doe is seeking money damages based in part on the following claims: she is unable to have sex, does not have any interest in sex, and has experienced difficulties in romantic relationships due to her inability to have sex and lack of interest in sex,” Mark C. Nanavati, an attorney hired by Virginia Wesleyan, told HuffPost on Sunday. “Given the significance of these claims in a case where $10 million is at issue, Virginia Wesleyan has to investigate these claims like any other claims Miss Doe is making in order to properly investigate and defend this suit.”

Really? You think a rape victim is lying about how traumatized she was about being raped? What the shit is that? I have no words. They’re not questioning that she was raped, they’re literally questioning how traumatized she was by it.

Clearly, this is just a tactic to intimidate the victim, and make her less likely to go through with the lawsuit. It’s a clever tactic, I suppose, but it’s also an incredibly shitty one. Hopefully, her lawyer will get this ruled inadmissible.
