Donald Trump Wants To Shut Down The Government To Defund Planned Parenthood

Although the measure to defund Planned Parenthood was defeated last night fair and square, the anti-choicers are not done yet, and still have hopes of winning the battle–based entirely on thoroughly debunked videos of Planned Parenthood employees supposedly selling fetal body parts for all that sweet, sweet, fetal body part money. Which they were not actually doing.

Still! They really think they still have a shot! Because maybe they could just shut down the entire government again until they get their way.

In an interview today with Hugh Hewitt, a conservative radio host who is probably really bitter towards his parents for naming him that, Donald Trump stated that this is definitely worth shutting the government down over. He also said that he believes Republicans could have stopped Obamacare if only they had listened to Ted Cruz.

“If the Republicans stuck together you could have done it with Obamacare also, but the Republicans decided not to stick together and they left a few people out there like Ted Cruz. If they had stuck together they wold have won that battle. I think you have to in this case [on Planned Parenthood] also, yes.”

In case you forgot, the whole government shutdown business in 2013 cost us about 250,000 jobs and up to $1.5 billion a day. But, you know, Ted Cruz got to have a 21 hour tantrum, so I guess it all worked out in the end.

Maybe you’re thinking “Oh, whatever–it’s not like he’s actually in government or anything. He is just a loud talking hairpiece!”–which, yeah–but the problem is that the Republicans who are actually in the government are gearing up for this.

What is in danger of happening is Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, when they return from recess in five weeks, attaching a measure to defund Planned Parenthood to a bill that funds the entire government. Which is what they did with Obamacare before in 2013.

I am not even going to argue about the other, myriad services Planned Parenthood provides, particularly to low-income women. Whether these people like it or not, abortion is legal, and we are legally entitled to have them. Full stop.

Whether they like it or not, those videos were bullshit and those Planned Parenthood employees were talking about donating fetal tissue and organs, not selling them. You might as well go around insisting we should defund the space program because you saw a thing that said the moon landing was faked.

There is also the Hyde Amendment, currently in place, which doesn’t allow federal funds to go towards abortion anyway. It’s a horrid amendment and it needs to go, because it means that low-income women who rely on medicaid do not have access to abortion, it means that women in our United States Military forces do not have access to abortion through their insurance. I have hopes that it will soon be pulled, but in the meantime it’s there, so there’s no reason for these whiny babies to go around crying about their tax dollars funding abortion, because they’re not.

In the long term, the Republicans attempting to shut the government down again will hurt them more than it will hurt us. People, including many on the Right, were not too happy about the last one, and I don’t think a lot of people are going to be too excited about shutting the entire government down over this. Should they attempt to go through with this, they’re going to have almost no chance in the Presidential election.

However, we don’t need to be losing that money, we don’t need to be losing those jobs. We need to continue funding the government, because we all rely on it one way or another. So I think we’d all rather they just accept their loss and move on like adults instead of holding their breath and stomping their feet until they get their way.
