Catholic Nun Has Some Harsh Words For The Pro-Life Movement
It’s hardly every day that I find myself agreeing with a nun when it comes to anything involving abortion, but I am 100% here for this quote by Sister Joan Chittister that’s been making the rounds today after being posted on Daily Kos:
“I do not believe that just because you’re opposed to abortion, that that makes you pro-life. In fact, I think in many cases, your morality is deeply lacking if all you want is a child born but not a child fed, not a child educated, not a child housed. And why would I think that you don’t? Because you don’t want any tax money to go there. That’s not pro-life. That’s pro-birth. We need a much broader conversation on what the morality of pro-life is.”
Yes. I have been saying this forever. They loooooove the fetus before it’s born, and then could not possibly care less whether it lives or dies afterwards. I’d have a much easier time believing that these people really cared about “the children” if they didn’t balk and whine at the idea of their precious tax dollars being used to feed and house them.
I’ve always believed that, for many, the opposition to abortion has much less to do with desperately caring about babies than it does with the idea that they see it as a woman shirking her punishment. There has always been a “you do the crime, you do the time” element to most pro-life arguments. Sex is the crime, pregnancy and birth and having to take care of a child is the time.
Even more surprisingly, Chittister believes in birth control, and doesn’t believe it’s her place to tell a woman not to have an abortion or not.
Now that’s a nun we could hang with.
