Gunman, Identified As John Russell Houser, Kills 3, Injures 9, In Latest Mass Shooting
Last night, at the Grand Theater in Lafayette, Louisiana, an older white male, now identified as John Russell Houser, 58, opened fire during a showing of “Trainwreck,” killing two people and injuring nine others. In total, Houser fired 15 shots, left the theater briefly before reportedly being forced back inside by responding officers, and turning the gun on himself.
Police say that Houser was a “drifter,” who had been staying at a nearby hotel; they found wigs and various disguises in Houser’s room, suggesting his initial plan was to commit the murders but not kill himself. Police say there does not appear to be a motive for this senseless crime, which comes on the heels of two other mass shootings, first in Charleston and then Chattanooga. The two victims have been identified as 21-year-old Macy Breaux and 33-year-old Jillian Johnson. Our condolences go out to the victims’ families and everyone impacted by yet another tragedy that could perhaps be prevented if we did a goddamn thing about the ease with which people can procure guns.
“When these kinds of acts of violence happen in a movie theater, when there’s no real good reason why this kind of evil should intrude on the lives of families who are just out for a night of entertainment, I know a lot of us are horrified and shocked,” said Louisiana Governor and current Republican presidential hopeful Bobby Jindal, the New York Times reported. “This is an awful night for Lafayette. This is an awful night for Louisiana. This is an awful night for the United States.”
This is where I would normally offer up some sort of plea for this country to do something about gun control, but frankly, after 20 children were massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary and 92 percent of Americans said they wanted stricter gun control laws and our government leaders, like Jindal, who recently spoke at an NRA event, still did NOTHING, I lost all hope.
