Tennessee Drunk Driving Campaign Also Wants You To Treat Women Like Shit

The Governor’s Highway Safety Office of Tennessee launched a campaign against drunk driving recently, targeting the young, male demographic in the best way they knew how — by distributing weirdly sexist coasters and fliers throughout local bars.

According to the Tennessean, the fliers read: “After a few drinks the girls look hotter and the music sounds better. Just remember: If your judgement is impaired, so is your driving.” Stacks of coasters were also distributed to bars throughout the state staffed and patronized by women and men alike, reading: “Buy a drink for a marginally good-looking girl, only to find out she’s chatty, clingy and your boss’s daughter.” Cool! Treat the women in your life like disposable pieces of garbage while slamming tequila and Coronitas. Drunk driving and being sexist go hand-in-hand, right?

Naturally, many people were displeased with this, and the campaign was shelved. Kendall Poole, the director of the GHSO, apologized for the campaign, explaining, “Because one of the goals of many Booze It and Lose It campaigns is to reach our high risk driving population, the marketing is often edgy and designed to grab the attention of the young male demographic. It was never the intent of the GHSO to be insensitive or insulting to women.”

The best of intentions, surely, but with the worst results. Next time, let’s try to raise awareness about drunk driving without insulting anyone, thanks.
