Obama To Become First Sitting President To Visit A Federal Prison
President Obama will become the first sitting president ever to visit a federal prison as part of a new push to focus on criminal justice – and hopefully – dismantling the horrifying reality of America’s prison industrial complex!
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that this move is to “lay out his ideas to make our country fairer, smarter and more cost effective while keeping the American people safe and secure.”
Part of the focus will be on minority communities and how they are unfairly imprisoned at an alarmingly larger rate than more affluent, white communities.
On Thursday, July 16th, the President will visit is the Federal Correctional Institution, El Reno near Oklahoma City. Keep an eye out for his interview with officers and inmates which will be broadcast on an upcoming episode of “Vice” for HBO as well.
