150 Year Old Galapagos Tortoise Peacefully Put To Rest

A giant Galapagos tortoise named Speed, who was more than 150 years old was put down at the San Diego Zoo in California on Sunday.

Zoologists say that Speed had been in geriatric decline for some years now and that it was time to end his suffering.

Speed was brought to California in 1933 as part of a program to preserve the endangered species from the Volcan Cerro Azul island of the Galapagos which is off the coast of Ecuador.

The zoo took part in an effort to restore the tiny numbers of the giant Galapagos Tortoises. Speed was the father to many of the offspring in the zoo.

God speed, Speed, and rest in piece!
