The Belly Button Challenge Is The Latest Feel-Bad Fad

There is a new fun body-shame-y thing that’s taking the Teen-ternet by storm, and it is just as ridiculous as the bikini bridge and the thigh gap. The belly button challenge is simple: Wrap one of your arms around your back, reaching your fingers to the other side of your torso, so that they eventually end up on your bellybutton. I’m sorry if you just pulled something weird in your shoulder just now. Here, let these teens show you the way.

This trend took off on Chinese social media platform Weibo, and is meant to serve as an accurate measure of your physical fitness and general health. Or, according to Shanghaiist, “The idea is that if you can reach your belly-button from behind, it means you have a good figure. If not, you probably need to lose weight.” Oh.

I’m inclined to think that this is something that relies less on having a “good figure” and more on flexibility and the length of your arms, but I am neither a doctor or a Chinese teenager, so what do I know? Just add this to the list of “things that make me feel weird about my body, but then fuck it who cares”, and move on with your day.
