Happy Friday! Let’s Let Norma From Orange Is The New Black Sing You Off!

Yes! The week is finally over! And Orange Is The New Black is on Netflix, and you are going to get to bingewatch the fuck out of that this weekend. It’s going to be good. I’ve watched the first two episodes already, and am excited to report that things are getting interesting with Norma, the prison mute, whom I totally love.

You may remember that at the end of Season One, Norma surprised everyone by singing in the Holiday play.

One of the craziest things I’ve discovered about Annie Golden, who plays Norma Romano on the series, is that I have actually been listening to her sing for almost my entire life! Now, you may have heard that Annie Golden was a pop singer in the 80s, this is true:

That song actually appeared on the “16 Candles” soundtrack. But that’s not how I know her–my mom actually would not let me watch “16 Candles” as a child because she did not care for Molly Ringwald. Nope! I know her voice from two different Broadway musicals, both of which I listened to constantly. Oddly, it never occurred to me that these songs were sung by the same person either.

Here she is singing “Frank Mills” from Hair, in which she played the character of Jeannie:

EVEN MORE EXCITING? Annie Golden originated the role of Squeaky Fromme in Sondheim’s Assassins. None of the videos of the original performance are very good quality, unfortunately, but here she is singing “Unworthy of Your Love” with Ben Cameron at Broadway Sessions back in 2012.

Seriously, this is my favorite thing. I love this song so much, I love Annie Golden so much, and I love Norma so much. I really hope we get to delve more into her background and character this season and what she actually did to get into Litchfield, but I can’t find out until I finish this post and call it quits for the week! So, on that note, HAPPY WEEKEND FRISKY READERS!
