Miley Cyrus: “I’m Literally Open To Every Single Thing Out There”

Miley Cyrus is naked except for some artfully placed mud and her pet pig Bubba Sue on the cover of Paper’s Summer Music Issue, which should surprise no one, since I feel like I have seen boobs approximately 100 times. In the interview within, she talks about her music, her activism, and her deep dedication to LGBT homeless youth and her Happy Hippie Foundation. She’s refreshingly frank and mature, with an actual desire to use her fame and her position in the world for some good. The most revealing part of her talk, however, was the tiny soundbite she dropped about her own sexuality.

I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn’t involve an animal and everyone is of age. Everything that’s legal, I’m down with. Yo, I’m down with any adult — anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me,” she says. “I don’t relate to being boy or girl, and I don’t have to have my partner relate to boy or girl.” She says she’s had romantic entanglements with women that were just as serious as the ones (Liam Hemsworth, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Nick Jonas) that ended up in Us Weekly. “I’ve had that,” she admits. “But people never really looked at it, and I never brought it into the spotlight.”

The rest of the piece is a delight to read, actually, and casts a new light on a performer that I had previously written off as an irritating cultural appropriator with a good voice singing songs that I like to dance to only after 2am. Her new album will possibly be influenced by Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Gucci Mane.  I’m here for it.
