Kill It With Fire: TLC Is Considering A Duggar Spin-Off About Daughters Jill And Jessa
TLC, also known as The Learning Channel, has apparently learned not a goddamn thing since it came out that Josh Duggar, one of the stars of “19 Kids & Counting,” molested five of his relatives, including his sisters. After begrudgingly pulling the show from its current schedule (but not before airing a marathon!), and remaining mute as to whether they’ll cancel the show entirely or just give Josh the boot, a source told Us Weekly that the network is trying to salvage their cash cow by developing a spin-off about eldest daughter Jill and Jessa, their husbands and their sure-to-be-exponentially-growing families.
Via Huffington Post:
“They’ve invested a lot of time in developing these story lines and the last thing they want to do is to throw it all away,” a source told the magazine, stressing that Josh would not be part of the new spinoff. TLC declined to comment on reports of a spinoff and reiterated to The Huffington Post that no long-term decisions have been made regarding the ultimate fate of “19 Kids and Counting.”
This makes me want to put my fist through a wall. TLC seems to believe that what occurred in this family — I’m talking about both Josh molesting his sisters and Jim Bob and Michelle doing fuck all about it — is totally random and utterly unrelated to their godawful puritanical Quiverfull “values.”* They think they can either remove “the bad apple” (i.e. Josh) or focus our attention on the Duggar’s next generation clown car vagina circus. BUT IT’S STILL THE SAME CIRCUS AND IT’S STILL GROSS. Their religious ideology, which deems sexual touching of any kind before marriage a sin, that teaches girls and women that they are literally the property of their father and then their husband, that women must be subservient to men, quite literally builds a foundation for abuse, helps to hide it, and does not teach victims, especially children, how to advocate for themselves.
Jill and Jessa, like all the Duggar children, were raised with Bill Gothard’s Advanced Training Institute (ATI) homeschool program, and will likely use it with their children as well. And guess what ATI teaches students in their “Counseling seminar” about “helping someone” who has been sexually assaulted? Oh look, a page from their teaching materials:
Like, seriously TLC, is the money so good that you’re going to go out of your fucking way to ignore what’s right in front of your face? Duggar Family Values are both ideologically and PHYSICALLY DANGEROUS. Josh Duggar maybe still would have molested those five little girls regardless of his religion, but he sure as shit was allowed to get away with his crimes because of it. By continuing to give ANY of the Duggars a platform for spreading their Quiverfull-esque crap in the wake of this horrible revelation, TLC would be willfully complicit in that ideology’s impact. Here’s hoping they think better of it. [Huffington Post]
*To be clear, the Duggars do not officially identify as members of the Quiverfull movement, but their beliefs are one and the same.
