Mike Huckabee Comes To Josh Duggar’s Defense

As you may have heard by now, Josh Duggar has admitted to having molested several young girls, including his sisters, as a teenager. He has since resigned from his position as the executive director of the Family Research Council–a group that has been rather dedicated to insisting that gay people are going to molest your children for the past 30 years.

Unsurprisingly, many conservatives have already started coming to his defense online, including Mike Huckabee–whom the family has endorsed for the 2016 presidential election.

Via Mike Huckabee’s Facebook (paragraph breaks mine):

Janet and I want to affirm our support for the Duggar family. Josh’s actions when he was an underage teen are as he described them himself, ‘inexcusable,’ but that doesn’t mean ‘unforgivable.’ He and his family dealt with it and were honest and open about it with the victims and the authorities.

No purpose whatsoever is served by those who are now trying to discredit Josh or his family by sensationalizing the story. Good people make mistakes and do regrettable and even disgusting things. The reason that the law protects disclosure of many actions on the part of a minor is that the society has traditionally understood something that today’s blood-thirsty media does not understand—that being a minor means that one’s judgement is not mature.

No one needs to defend Josh’s actions as a teenager, but the fact that he confessed his sins to those he harmed, sought help, and has gone forward to live a responsible and circumspect life as an adult is testament to his family’s authenticity and humility. Those who have enjoyed revealing this long ago sins in order to discredit the Duggar family have actually revealed their own insensitive bloodthirst, for there was no consideration of the fact that the victims wanted this to be left in the past and ultimately a judge had the information on file destroyed—not to protect Josh, but the innocent victims. Janet and I love Jim Bob and Michelle and their entire family.

They are no more perfect a family than any family, but their Christian witness is not marred in our eyes because following Christ is not a declaration of our perfection, but of HIS perfection. It is precisely because we are all sinners that we need His grace and His forgiveness. We have been blessed to receive God’s love and we would do no less than to extend our love and support for our friends. In fact, it is such times as this, when real friends show up and stand up. Today, Janet and I want to show up and stand up for our friends. Let others run from them. We will run to them with our support.

He’s right on one account – I will fully admit to being “bloodthirsty” when it comes to something like some asshole who has dedicated his life to trying to deprive gay people of rights because they’re so “sinful” turning out to be a child molester.  I will fully admit to also being pissed that these parents thought that the solution to this problem was a stern talking-to and asking for god’s forgiveness, and continuing to let him be around those children.

I mean, what? Do these people really think they’re going to waltz around, talking about “family values,” condemning everyone who isn’t them, talking about how fabulously pure they are and how bad it is to have sex before marriage, accusing LGBT people of being child molesters, and then get forgiveness when they turn out to be way the fuck worse than all of us? I don’t think so. They deserve everything they are getting right now and more.

You know what the top comment on that post is? “Let he who has not sinned, cast the first stone.”

Fuck that.

These people have been throwing stones for years. Mike Huckabee has been throwing stones for years. All of them have built empires upon the throwing of stones. That is literally what they do. They stand around telling everyone else they are “immoral” and “sinful” for things far less reprehensible than molesting children.

You wanna talk throwing stones from glass houses? Michelle Duggar led a robo-calling initiative to keep trans people from being allowed to use bathrooms, because she thought they were all sexual predators. You wanna talk “sensationalizing?” Here’s some sensationalizing for you.

And she did that knowing that her own damn son, a white cis male raised in her wholesome Christian home, was a predator himself.

To boot, here are some things the ever-so-forgiving Mike Huckabee has said about gay people!

“I feel homosexuality is an aberrant, unnatural, and sinful lifestyle, and we now know it can pose a dangerous public health risk”

“I’m not real fond when people try to tell me that I’m just against same sex marriage. I tell people I’m actually just for keeping marriage in the only manner in which it’s even been known in any culture in any civilization throughout all of history, and dear friends, until Moses comes down with two stone tablets from Brokeback Mountain saying he’s changed the rules, let’s keep it like it is.”

“(legalizing gay marriage would) be like saying, well, there are a lot of people who like to use drugs so let’s go ahead and accommodate those who want to use drugs. There are some people who believe in incest, so we should accommodate them. There are people who believe in polygamy, should we accommodate them?”

I could not be more happy about “the media” tearing these people the hell down. They deserve it. The word hypocrite is not strong enough here. Their needs to be a new word. Hyper-hypocrite?

Really. What exactly is the word for people who accuse everyone else of sexual immorality while being a hell of a lot worse in that area than we are? I mean, what gauge are they going by that they think being gay or having sex before marriage is the worst thing on earth, but child molestation is somehow forgivable?

I’m sorry, but when your entire schtick is letting people know just how much more moral you are than they are, then yes, we get to take you the fuck down when you turn out to be so much worse than we are. If you are going to get on TV and talk about how fabulously holy you are, then you had better never have done anything wrong in your whole life. Certainly, nothing so wrong as molesting a child. Which, yes, is a thing you definitely know is wrong when you are a teenager.
