Search “N*gga House” In Google Maps And You’ll Be Directed To The White House
Type the words “nigga house” right now in Google maps. What are your findings?
Some of my Facebook friends have been sharing posts with their search results and, well, it is a bit disturbing. It seems that the White House pops up whenever you enter “nigga house” into a Google Maps query.
Now don’t get me wrong, I definitely don’t think this is some conspiracy to further humiliate the first Black President of the United States of America. Yeah, right-winged conservatives welcomed POTUS to Twitter earlier this week by sending him tweets with the words “nigger” and “monkey,” not to mention a photo of a lynched cartoon Obama accompanied with words “Rope” to replace”Hope” (the slogan that characterized the message for his 2008 campaign), but those were just stupid individuals. In this case, we are talking about a huge tech giant – Google – and one would really hope that this is just a major algorithm FAIL.
Actually, I can demonstrate why it is. Whenever you also type in the words “figga house” in a maps search, you are also directed to the White House. So, this is not necessarily a matter of intended foul play. Maybe the word “nigga” simply yields no results and the most famous site with the word “house” in it is The White House. However, a search of the words “nigger house” takes you to a building that is the site for a television station called The Underground Railroad TV, in Chicago IL. So, yeah, not sure I can really come up with good reasoning or logic for that.
Nevertheless, Google is going to have to do something about this. People are outraged, and with good reason. Words that are associated with hate or racism most certainly should yield ZERO results in the maps feature and most certainly should not have any connection with the most symbolic place in the country. Especially not when one of those words has been used so frequently to dehumanize the first Black president and his family, who now occupy that space.
