Miley Cyrus: “You Can Be Alone”

“It has a lot to do with being a feminist, but I’m finally O.K. with being alone. I think that’s something we have to talk about more: that you can be alone. There are times in my life where I’ve had boyfriends or girlfriends. And there are times where I just love being with myself and don’t want to give part of myself away to someone else … I think that’s a new freedom for women, especially. I don’t know that my mother would have been able to be 22 and secure in being alone. But my future doesn’t rely on having a partner.”

Back in 2013, Miley Cyrus mentioned just after ending her engagement to Liam Hemsworth that one of the biggest keys to her growing up was getting comfortable with being alone. Back then, she admitted to staying with Hemsworth longer than she should have because she was scared of being by herself, and she told Time yesterday, while promoting her newly-launched Happy Hippie Foundation, that it’s still a vital lesson for her. I love that she’s still talking about this stuff, because she’s surely not the only young woman to feel this way. [Time] [Image via Getty]
