Actors On The New Adam Sandler Movie Are Being Asked To Darken Their Faces
If the puerile and racist jokes on the set of Adam Sandler’s latest Netflix movie, “Ridiculous Six,” weren’t enough to make you regret ever watching “Happy Gilmore,” try this on for size: According to The Hollywood Reporter, “members of the makeup team have been darkening actors of various ethnicities (including black and Asian talent) to make them appear Native American.” Wow.
This nose-wrinkling idiocy was confirmed by Allison Young, an actor in the film:
“I’m full-blooded Navajo and they bronzed me. I was quite confused,” Young told the network[MSNBC]. “That says something when the cultural advisor for the film quits because he’s offended.”
Yes. When the “cultural advisor” of a movie is so offended by the work he is supposed to be culturally advising, there is a problem. A big one. Netflix, naturally, declined to comment, saying instead that the film is a broad satire of Western movies and the stereotypes they popularized, featuring a diverse cast that is not only part of — but in on — the joke.”
Neflix, get it together. If people are literally walking off the set of a movie that’s supposed to be satire, perhaps you should reconsider. Satire is one thing, but blatant racism is quite another.
