Trans Man Aydian Dowling Might Be Men’s Health’s “Ultimate Guy” This Year
Trans bodybuilder and activist Aydian Dowling is in the lead in a Men’s Health competition to find “The Ultimate Guy” to put on their cover. Thoughts, in no particular order:

The Men’s Health competition web site defines the “Ultimate Guy” as someone who’s “fit and fearless, a doer who gives back and leads by example.” Dowling told People that he got into bodybuilding “because I wanted my outer body to feel more masculine like my inner soul does, so I started training and it really just changed my whole life.” Since then, he’s started training other trans men, and started the YouTube collaboration Beefheads Fitness for trans men.
Transitioning comes with a lot of really unique health challenges, of course, and Dowling’s competition page shares his own struggles with finding balance both physically and mentally: “As a Transgender Male, having a healthy body and mind is my ultimate goal to find peace within my soul. Although I may always have some kind of battle with my body, I continue to work everyday for a happy peace within.”
Dowling has a formidable lead in the competition, and a win for Dowling would be a symbolic win for the trans* community as a whole. Trans* activists have been fighting for a cultural perception of trans men just as men for the better part of the last century. To see a trans man as the ultimate man would be wonderful, indeed.
