Jennifer Hudson Sings With James Corden, Proves She Has No Indoor Voice
Jennifer Hudson was the next celebrity to join James Corden in his car as he drove around Hollywood and sang along to songs on the radio, and it was as enjoyable, if not more so, than the Mariah Carey version. They went to a drive through, talked about Jennifer Hudson’s old jobs and stopped by her star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. James and Jennifer even tackled her version of that old chestnut, “And I Am Telling You,” which is a lot of song to hear, even with headphones. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be in a car with all of that sound.
Which brings me to my primary point: Jennifer Hudson, talented singer, survivor of horrible hardships, and my favorite “American Idol” contestant to date, has no indoor voice.
Here she is singing a song during the In Memoriam part of the Oscars this year. I will give her +10 for a hint of chill in the opening:[/videoembed]
Here’s her tribute to Whitney Houston, singing “I Will Always Love You,” a song that I always associated with being half whisper, half shout. IT’S ALMOST ALL SHOUT, J-HUD. SUMMON SOME HUSH.[/videoembed]
It’s okay. We know you can sing! We’ve hard it many times before. Some of us maybe prefer your version of “And I Am Telling You” to the Jennifer Holliday one, but we’d never tell Jennifer Holliday that because she’d eat us:
You know when it’s okay to throw away your indoor voice completely, to discard hastily of all chill you might possess? When you’re auditioning for “American Idol.” We still love you, J-Hud. Your constant shouting is what won us over in the first place, but you’re doing well now! Find an indoor voice. Cherish it. We’ll love you just the same.
