Life Dream Status: Florida Hotel Wakes Spring Breakers With “The Lion King”

Since 2012, the Panama City Beach Holiday Inn in Florida has awoken spring breakers each morning at 11 a.m. with the opening notes of “The Circle of Life.” When local media astutely noted that the Holiday Inn chose the song because “when a lot of these spring breakers were younger, ‘The Lion King’ was a popular movie,” I think what they really meant to imply was that “The Circle of Life” has millennials trained like Pavlovian dogs to drop what we’re doing, mindlessly flock toward the source of sound, and lift the nearest object over our heads Simba-style whenever we hear it playing. Not surprisingly, that’s exactly what Holiday Inn guests do on their balconies when the song begins each day. Marketers, take note: this soundtrack is your ticket to twenty-something mind control. One visitor says she even cried the first time the song played, which, if I’m being honest, I blubber like an idiot every time “The Lion King” comes on so I can’t really be one to judge. My only confusion is over WJHG’s insistence that the message of the song “fits with the kids and the mood and what they’re going through right now.” I am not clear on how a song about the poetry of life and death and wild gazelles and our purpose on this earth is a direct metaphor for whipped cream bikini contests and Bud Lights on the beach, but oh well! It’s too fun to matter. [WJHG] [UPI]
