NCSU Frat Suspended Over Book Filled With Rape And Lynching Jokes
What the hell is wrong with people?
The Pi Kappa Phi fraternity at North Carolina State University has been placed on “interim suspension” by its national leadership after a waitress at a restaurant found their secret pledge book filled with incredibly disturbing jokes about raping women–both alive and dead–and lynching black people and turned it over to the local news station.
“It will be short and painful, just like when I rape you”
“if she’s old enough to pee, she’s old enough to me”
“let’s go to Raleigh and yell at some n******.”
“If she’s hot enough, she doesn’t need a pulse,”
“That tree is so perfect for lynching,”
“Be kind to the whales because they’ll lead you to the dolphins,”
“You can never trust a n***** as far as you can throw them”
The Pi Kappa Phi national organization has issued a statement condemning the book and the statements therein.
Now, it’s not terribly surprising that fraternity members in North Carolina think rape and lynching are hilarious. The thing that really gets me is that the whole point of these organizations is not just toga parties and keg stands. The point of these organizations, largely, is to give these kids a leg up when they go into the professional world, through other fraternity members. It’s all about making connections.
Given the fact that the vast majority of fraternity members are white, the Greek system is, for all intents and purposes, affirmative action for generally well-off white people (not unlike legacy programs and “Daddy’s friend” programs). And not just any old white people! The sort of white people who write shit like this and think it’s adorable. That gives me the creeps.
Surely, given the post-grad benefits of belonging to a fraternity, the pressure to go along with this kind of disgusting behavior, and to become inured to it, is pretty high. It’s hard not to wonder what happens when kids who spend college joking about lynching black people and raping women go out into the job market, and eventually become the people doing the hiring.
Clearly, not all, or even most fraternities are anything like this frat, or like last weeks chanting racist frat. But I don’t know. It does irk me that these kids, should they be reinstated, will benefit from opportunities as a result of being a part of this kind of organization.
