Abandoned Dog Photographed Desperately Chasing After Owners’ Truck

When two Louisiana men abandoned their dog Butterbean at a Shell gas station on Monday, the German shepherd mix chased their pick-up truck down a two-lane highway for over a mile, dodging traffic in a desperate attempt to chase them down. Lorie Hollis, who was also at the Shell station that afternoon, took a heartbreaking photo of Butterbean trying to catch up with the truck. She told ABC News about the heartbreaking scene:

“I saw a gentleman walking around the gas station with the dog following him, and I thought he was homeless. He then sat on the back of this pickup truck and talked to the dog, who seemed to be very in tune to what he was saying. Next thing I know, another man comes out, he tells the dog to ‘get out’ and ‘go away. He shut the tail gate, and the dog tries to put its paws up to climb, but he just enters the truck and they back up real fast almost hitting the dog and speed off.”

Hollis tried to follow the dog’s owners in her own car but lost track of them. When she returned to the gas station and asked employees if they knew anything about the situation, an employee told her, “The dog lives in the hood, and you need to mind your own fucking business.” Hollis’s photo caught the attention of a local news reporter, who was able to track down the owners and provide their contact information to Humane Society of Louisiana director Jeff Dorson. He told ABC News:

“A local reporter found the owners, and we’ve discovered it’s not uncommon at all for this family to abandon the dog at the station and let it chase their truck. They’ve done this multiple times and apparently think it’s no big deal, and they don’t seem to care about the welfare of the dog…We’re hoping to get a citation issued through our local animal control against the owners for having their dog at large.”

Humane Society volunteers have been asked to canvas the neighborhood in search of Butterbean, and there’s a push to for the owners to face legal repercussions for their scummy, heartless behavior. Reminder to other assholes in the world: if you can’t take care of your pets anymore, you can drop them off at a shelter where they’ll be loved and potentially re-homed instead of just dumping them on the street to starve or suffer. Don’t they at least deserve that much decency?
