Huckabee Equates Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage To Forcing Jews To Sell “Bacon Wrapped Shrimp”

In an interview with CNN on Sunday, Mike Huckabee explained why he is never going to support the legalization of gay marriage, which is already legal in most of the states:

“I’d like to think that there’s room in America for people who have different points of view without screaming and shouting and wanting to shut their businesses down,” he said. “What worries me in this new environment we’re in, it’s not just that someone might disagree, they don’t want to argue with me, even take a different point of view. They want to close someone’s business down.”

Huckabee pointed to President Barack Obama’s 2008 opposition to same-sex marriage, but said there’s no chance he’ll ever drop his opposition to gay marriage.

“This is not just a political issue. It is a biblical issue. And as a biblical issue — unless I get a new version of the scriptures, it’s really not my place to say, OK, I’m just going to evolve,” Huckabee said.

“It’s like asking someone who’s Jewish to start serving bacon-wrapped shrimp in their deli. We don’t want to do that — I mean, we’re not going to do that. Or like asking a Muslim to serve up something that is offensive to him, or to have dogs in his backyard,” he said. “We’re so sensitive to make sure we don’t offend certain religions, but then we act like Christians can’t have the convictions that they’ve had for 2,000 years.”

People are allowed to disagree or to have opinions, regardless of how ridiculous those opinions are. They are not, however, allowed to discriminate. Just like someone is technically free to not like black people, but is not legally allowed to have a restaurant for only white people.

There is an important difference in the way Huckabee wishes to practice his religion and the way other groups practice theirs. He wants gay people–who may not ascribe to his religion–to be required to practice his religion by not getting married.

Jewish people are not telling anyone else that they cannot eat bacon-wrapped shrimp. I went to a nearly all-Jewish high school, in a nearly all-Jewish neighborhood and not once did anyone tell me that I had to abide by any Jewish dietary laws. Across the board, Jewish people do not care if non-Jewish people keep Kosher or not.

We don’t have any laws, anywhere, requiring that restaurants must serve a particular entre√© or appetizer. That would be weird, and also boring and I bet you we would all be really sick of that food by now, were that the case. However, if a Jewish person were working as a server in a non-Kosher restaurant that served bacon-wrapped shrimp, they would indeed have to serve it. Has Mike Huckabee ever been to a restaurant and had a Jewish server who refused to serve him something non-Kosher that was on the menu? I’m going to guess not. In fact, I am going to throw it out there and say that this has literally never happened to anyone, ever.

So, this is a false equivalency. A correct one would be if Jewish people campaigned for everyone in this country–regardless of their religious beliefs–to be required to adhere to their dietary laws. Or if Jehovah’s Witnesses campaigned to ban blood donations and transfusions, or if Mormons tried to make coffee an illegal substance, or if Christian Scientists wanted to close all the hospitals. Or if Muslims were out campaigning to require non-Muslims to abide by Sharia Law–which, despite the insistence of Fox News–exactly none of them are doing.

What people like Mike Huckabee want is for people who don’t believe in their religion to practice it anyway. Which is weird. They want gay people to not get married because it’s against their religion. They don’t want to teach evolution in school because their religion teaches that it’s not true. They don’t want women taking birth control because their religion tells them it’s bad.

Exactly no one is saying that Mike Huckabee cannot practice his religion and adhere to its rules. He does not have to marry another man, believe in evolution or take birth control. He does not have to go to any gay weddings. He does not even have to personally like any LGBT people. He can dislike gay people all he wants, and I can dislike him for disliking gay people. I can also dislike him just because I don’t like his face, and he can do the same to me. WELCOME TO AMERICA, MIKE HUCKABEE.
