Tess Holliday Is Now The Largest Plus-Size Model To Sign With A Major Agency

Plus-size model Tess Holliday (also known as Tess Munster) signed with MiLK Model Management last week, making her the first model of her height and size to be signed to a major agency. While it’s frustrating to live in a world in which it’s this rare for a beautiful woman to be hired as a model despite not sharing a body type with Kate Moss, this is a kickass milestone. Holliday gets us one step closer to a society where agency moves like this are just the norm. In 2013, Holliday launched the body positive #effyourbeautystandards social media movement, which catapulted her to online fame and encouraged thousands of women to recognize the beauty in their own bodies.

At 5’2″ and a size 22, Holliday is more relatable to many everyday women than your typical model. According to the New York Daily News, the average plus-size model is taller than 5’8″ and a size 8-16. Holliday, who is engaged and has a young son, grew up in Southern Mississippi where she faced lots of bullying. She told the Daily News:

“It took a really long time to get over things that had happened to me during the vital years of my life…My mom always encouraged me, but the rest of my friends and family thought I was nuts…It doesn’t feel like it’s me. Every time I have a big thing happen in my career, it’s an out of body experience. I’m always still that 13-year-old girl in Mississippi who people told I wasn’t good enough. I never could have imagined that I could be here.”

She got her first modeling break in 2011 and has since been featured in Vogue Italia and campaigns for countless clothing brands prior to signing with MiLK. She inspires and connects with her 358,000 Instagram followers on the regular and updates readers on her life and modeling career on her blog.
