I Love David Bowie, But He Is Unbearably Pretentious

I love David Bowie so, so, so much. SO much. There’s a David Bowie colony in my heart that takes up most of the left ventricle. I am awed and inspired by his body of work, by the flexibility of his mind, and by his prowess as a performer and as a businessman.

That all being said, he is sometimes unbearably pretentious. Take, for example, his responses to a Proustian personality quiz given to him by Vanity Fair in 2009:

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Discovering morning.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?

While in New York, tolerance.

Outside New York, intolerance.

Which word or phrases do you most overuse?

“Chthonic,” “miasma.”

What is your favorite occupation?

Squishing paint on a senseless canvas.

What is your motto?

“What” is my motto.

OK, Jareth. You just keep on doing you.
