Beauty Test Drive: TopShop Creamy Finish Lipstick In Wicked

I’m super into the dark lip trend that’s going on right now, but with my fair complexion it’s hard to find a color that doesn’t make me look like a vampire. When TopShop sent us some of their new fall/winter lipsticks, I spotted a burgundy color called “Wicked” that I knew I wanted to try. So did it look good, wear well and last? Here’s what my Beauty Test Drive revealed…

Price: $12, Topshop.com

Application: This lipstick is described as a “creamy finish lipstick,” so I was a little surprised when it went on more concentrated than creamy. While it did go on smooth, it required a few coats to completely cover the lip evenly. Even then, it certainly required some “lip smushing,” as my mom calls it. The lipstick definitely has a stain quality to it, which, combined with the dark color, made it a little bit difficult to clean up along the lip lines, and especially around the cupid’s bow. I used Bite Beauty’s Lush Lip Wipes to clean up the edges and avoid smearing, which worked like a charm. (Note: those things are awesome and come highly recommended.) Once applied, it also appears a bit lighter than it does in the tube— not a bad thing, but a little deceiving.

Results: I love the color of the lipstick because it’s not crazy dark, but is dramatic enough for a fall/winter look that makes a statement. I got several compliments on the color, and honestly think it would look pretty on many different skin tones. On the other hand, it seems to dry out on the faster side, making it a little bit clumpy (which certainly might be attributed to the fact that I’m congested and have only been breathing out of my mouth). After several hours of wear (and eating!), the color stayed dark and remained in place, though it did fade a bit around the inner lip. It would probably need a fresh coat after a few hours or so, but for $12 a tube, that’s no problem. Overall, I love the color and like the texture, but wish it could have lasted a little bit longer.
